Station Equipment

Kenwood TS440SAT

This is the primary High Frequency radio that is installed at VA3OPP. This radio consists of a general coverage receiver (1.8 to 30 MHz including all shortwave bands), and transmitter covers the amateur bands from 160M (which is just above the AM broadcast band to 10M which is just below 30 MHz. Communications coverage with this 100 Watt output radio can be world wide. The radio comes equipped with the accessories listed below. There are more donated accessories that have not made the station picture. Of note is a KAM or Kantronics All Mode digital modem that can communicate using digital transmissions (Packet, PACTOR, RTTY, and AMTOR). A computer has also been donated to assist with logbook keeping and to interface with the digital communications modes.

Kenwood MC60 Microphone
The Kenwood MC-60A has a communication type dynamic unidirectional moving coil type mic element.
It features UP-DOWN tuning (on compatible Kenwood transceivers) plus a built-in pre-amp. There is a switch for PTT (push to talk) and also a lock feature. The mic impedance may be set for 50K ohms or 500 ohms. The frequency response is 150 Hz to 10 kHz (-6dB) with the Preamp off and 200 Hz to 7 kHz (-6 dB) with the Preamp on. The heavy zinc die-cast base provides extra stability.
Kenwood PS-50 Power Supply
The Kenwood PS-50 power supply provides 13.8 VDC at 20 A (continuous operation one hour) or 22 amps at 25% duty cycle. Input is 120 VAC 60 Hz. Ripple voltage is less than 20 mV rms (at 13.8 VDC 16A). Regulation is ± 0.7 V at 10% input variation with 16 A.
Power consumption is 550 watts. This power supply features a tilt bar. There are terminals for output on the back panel 6.8 x 4.4 x 12.6 inches 15.2 lbs (173x107x322 mm 6.9 kg).
MFJ 422 Electronic Keyer
The MFJ Model (MFJ-442B ) Electronic Keyer Paddle is a unique keyer with built in paddles. Its integrated twin Paddles operate on an internal 9VDC battery or miniature power jack for optional external 5 - 9VDC power supply. In 'Auto' mode it is an iambic keyer. In 'Semi Auto' mode it emulates a 'bug' key.
The keyer has an internal speaker for sidetone monitoring and for practice use.. Controls include a volume control to adjust sidetone audio level, a tone control to vary the pitch and a speed control. Iambic paddle travel before contact is adjustable to your preference with an Allen wrench that is 'clipped' to the bottom of the base plate.
Manual or Straight Key
What can I say? For the nostalgic type, there is also a manual straight key. A key (or keyer) is used for transmitting morse code. Morse Code can often be copied by a distant station when conditions prohibit effective use of SSB ( voice transmissions).
